The Great Debate: Timber or Aluminium?
This is one of the most common questions I get. Both materials have their place, and the "right" choice depends on your priorities.
Timber Pergolas
#
The Good:
- Natural, warm aesthetic
- Can be painted or stained any colour
- Renewable resource
- Often cheaper upfront
- Easy to modify or add to
The Challenges:
- Requires regular maintenance (oiling/staining every 1-2 years)
- Can warp, crack, or rot
- Susceptible to termites
- Shorter lifespan (15-25 years)
- Colour fades without upkeep
Best Timber Species for Melbourne:
- Merbau: Hardwood, naturally durable
- Spotted Gum: Australian hardwood, beautiful grain
- Treated Pine: Budget option, needs more maintenance
Aluminium Pergolas
#
The Good:
- Zero maintenance
- Won't rust, rot, or warp
- Termite proof
- 30+ year lifespan
- Powder coating lasts decades
- Clean, modern lines
The Challenges:
- Higher upfront cost
- Less "natural" look
- Harder to modify later
- Limited to powder coat colours
Real Cost Comparison
| Factor | Timber | Aluminium |
| Initial cost (4x4m) | $8,000-$12,000 | $12,000-$18,000 |
| Annual maintenance | $200-$500 | $0 |
| 10-year total cost | $10,000-$17,000 | $12,000-$18,000 |
| 20-year total cost | $12,000-$22,000 | $12,000-$18,000 |
My Honest Recommendation
I've moved away from timber pergolas for most projects. Why? Melbourne's variable weather is harsh on wood, and I've seen too many beautiful timber structures deteriorate because owners couldn't keep up with maintenance.
Unless you're committed to regular upkeep and love the timber aesthetic, I recommend aluminium or steel frames with powder coating.
